September 9, 2020, New York City – International non-profit the Climate Group has today announced that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will deliver a virtual keynote speech at the Climate Week NYC Opening Ceremony on Monday, September 21.

The Opening Ceremony will officially mark the start of Climate Week NYC – the only major climate summit to take place in 2020 – and will bring together leading international figures from the private, public and philanthropic sectors to showcase amazing climate action and find ways to do more. This year it will be broadcast through an interactive digital platform for invited participants, as well as being available to stream for public viewers.

Along with HRH The Prince of Wales, who has previously warned of the catastrophic consequences of inaction on climate change, other new speakers confirmed to address the world at the Opening Ceremony include:

-        Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund

-        Professor Rebecca M. Henderson, Harvard Business School

-        Mathias Lelievre, CEO, ENGIE Impact

-        Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart, Inc.

-        Dickon Pinner, Senior Partner and Global Leader of McKinsey & Company’s Sustainability Practice

They will join Marc Engel, Chief Supply Chain Office at Unilever; Fiona Reynolds, CEO of Principles for Responsible Investment; and Zhenguo Li, Founder and President of LONGi Group, who were announced as speakers earlier this year. Key themes that will be discussed include future-fit business strategies for a net-zero world; the role of finance in a green recovery; and building a better future.

Helen Clarkson, CEO of international non-profit The Climate Group, said: “It is our honor to be hosting an address from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales at this year’s Climate Week NYC. By bringing together these high profile and influential voices from across the world, we hope to reaffirm the urgency and momentum needed to tackle climate change at this critical juncture.

Doug McMillon, President & CEO, Walmart, Inc. said: “Leaders from around the globe and from all sectors are faced with answering important questions and addressing serious challenges regarding the environment. Many of these are not new, while others have emerged more recently. All are urgent.

“This year, Climate Week NYC and The Hub Live events occur at a crucial moment, when, maybe more than ever, focused, decisive action is needed. Walmart remains committed to this work and is looking forward to participating in the upcoming summit.”

Climate Week NYC (September 21-27), now in its twelfth year, takes place annually alongside the United Nations General Assembly. This year in particular will see a momentous Opening Day, with the UN’s Race to Zero campaign confirmed to host a major range of commitments and announcements as part of key event, COP26 and The Zero Carbon Growth Agenda, which will follow the Opening Ceremony.
